OYC Junior Sailing FAQs

What does my child need for class?
We require:
  1. lifejacket
  2. whistle

  4. reusable water bottle
We recommend:
  1. sunscreen
  2. sunglasses
  3. towel
  4. swim shirt
  5. swim shorts

Do we need a boat?
For optis - Yes! Every sailor is responsible for having his/her own Opti - either owned or rented/borrowed.
For 420s - Maybe! We do have six Club boats that we all share, though we do encourage considering purchasing a (used) 420 if your sailor intends to compete in regattas.

Does the club have Optis we can use?
No, we do not have club boats.

Where do we find an Opti we can use?
Each season, we do try to keep a spreadsheet that lists people with available boats and their contact information. Please feel free to reach out to people you know to figure out rentals.

What time does class start and end?
Opti I: 9:00 am -12 pm
Opti II: 9:30 am-12:30 pm
Sailing Adventures: 1:00 pm-4pm
Opti III: 1:30 pm-4:30 pm
Opti Race: 1:30 pm-4:30 pm

Where can I access the regatta schedule?
Results and the schedule can be found at: https://www.pgjsa.org/home-1-1.

How can I schedule a private lesson with one of the OYC instructors?
Either email orientjrsailing@gmail.com and we will help assign an instructor that matches your need, or you can directly schedule with your sailor's instructor.

Can my child participate in Tuesday Night Races (TNR)?
We love the enthusiasm! Typically, Opti I and Opti II sailors may participate at the discretion of their instructors. Opti III and Opti Racers are expected to participate, and Sailing Adventurers are highly encouraged to participate.

How can I get involved as a parent?
There are many ways to get involved! We welcome parent volunteers during Friday Hot Dog lunches. We also need volunteers for our annual regatta. Keep you eyes peeled for emails pertaining to involvement opportunities.

I'm a parent and want to learn how to sail! Are there any opportunities to learn?
Yes! We host 3 annual learn-to-sail clinics throughout the summer. We also offer private lessons. Please take a look at the adult sailing tab of the website to learn more about our clinics. You can also reach out to oycsailing@gmail.com to schedule private lessons.
